Design decisions
Content from data
Distances, terminals, transport and sights live in YAML, and each country, city and airport’s texts and FAQs are generated from per-language templates. If a translation is missing, the build fails.
Live flights without a paid API
A Lambda queries each airport’s official source only when someone asks, keeps the answer 5 minutes in S3 and CloudFront caches it for 60 s. If the source is down, the last copy is served.
Alerts when a source changes
Each query records the airport’s health. Five failures in a row over 24 h, or 72 h without flights where there used to be some, send an alert, and a daily sweep covers airports nobody visits.
Growing through the long tail
Big airports compete with official websites; small ones and specific destinations do reach the top 10. The site grows in steps measured in Search Console, without publishing thousands of thin pages at once.
