fita

Free, open-source reading aids for people with ADHD and dyslexia: they gently emphasize the start of each word, on the web and in your ebooks, and everything happens on your device.

Why I built it

Reading has always cost me an enormous amount of effort. It has been a big problem for me, the kind that isn’t visible from the outside. fita comes from there: it’s the tool I wish I had. I’m building it in the hope of starting to read more fluently and with less effort, and I’m leaving it open and free in case it also helps someone who recognises themselves in this.

Design decisions

Everything on the device

No servers, accounts, analytics or usage limits. The files you convert never leave your device.

One core, three surfaces

The library decides which part of each word to emphasize and applies it to the DOM. The extension, the live demo and the ebook converter all reuse it.

Accessible by design

Screen readers read the text exactly as before, it works keyboard-only, there is a dark mode and five emphasis styles to choose from.

No promises the research doesn’t back

Research doesn’t show an average speed gain, so fita doesn’t promise faster reading: it aims for reading that is more comfortable, your way.
